How do we make an accent sound authentic in a self tape?

Casting directors often state in their casting brief that a specific accent, like standard American accent is required.  To achieve this, talent must firstly hear the accent in their mind before attempting to use it authentically. If uncertain about using an accent, talent should revert to their natural dialect, instead.

Creatively, there is a significant difference between taking a creative risk and possibly jeopardising the rapport we are trying to establish with the Casting Director. A convincing accent in a self tape requires self-confidence.  The Casting Director will hear the accent immediately, witness the truth in the eyes of the talent, particularly if the accent is inconsistent, unclear, or unconvincing.
