Australian Actors Studio – Introducing Bella

Australian Actors Studio, in partnership with Audition Buddy; is all about celebrating talent, like maintaining an accent in a self-tape.  To achieve this, it is essential that the accent remains consistent throughout.

How do we make an accent consistent and believable, if it is not our natural accent?

Casting directors often stipulate in their casting brief that a specific accent, such as a standard American accent, is a requirement.  To accomplish this, the talent must first be able to hear the accent in their mind before attempting to deliver it consistently. If uncertain about using an accent, it is advisable to revert to our natural dialect instead.

There is a significant difference between taking a creative risk and possibly jeopardizing the rapport we are trying to establish with the Casting Director. A convincing accent requires self-confidence, as the Casting Director will not only hear the accent but also see the truth in our eyes, particularly if the accent is inconsistent, unclear, or unconvincing.

What strategies can be employed to leave a lasting impression on the Casting Director, thereby increasing one’s prospects for future self-tape consideration?

Crafting a performance rich in a believable accent is essential, as it will stand out more than the performance itself if the accent is inconsistent.  Bella’s expertise highlights the importance of delivering a consistent accent, a creative skill that can be honed by anyone with lots of practice and consistency.

The Australian Actors Studio provides an inclusive training environment for actors and non-actors alike.  This is ideal for supporting creative risks like accents and dialects.  Ultimately, we support students towards their successful career in stage, screen, and voice-over performances.
